Who is Miss Rita?
Be it a carnival, the first neo-burlesque show, a ground-breaking musical, a Bollywood show (complete with orchestra & playback singer), to bringing Lucha Libre to the attention of the English-speaking world, Rita D’Albert is driven to create crucial, communal experiences around the world.
Born in Queens, formed in the counter culture/ subcultures of Southern California, Rita’s public debut was as a floutist but reinvented herself as a guitarist & platinum blonde glamour gal years later. She carved a niche for herself with her unique ability to stage energetic, wildly entertaining, oddball shows on the fertile grounds of post-punk Los Angeles
Rita began her career playing guitar with the legendary Los Angeles all-girl garage band The Pandoras. She went on to play lead guitar with LA goth band Human Drama, a fixture of the SCREAM scene. She later formed a duo with Andy Prieboy, accompanying him on guitar, bass, flute and back-up vocals. From their cabaret shows at Largo and two tours of Australia, Rita went on to co-found and produce the groundbreaking LA musical White Trash Wins Lotto (the rise and fall of Axl Rose).
WTWL took the HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen by storm and was a critical & audience favorite. Rita returned the following year and performed in Catherine O’Hara’s late night lounge with Steve Martin, Martin Short and Andrea Martin. From there she took the show to a legendary run at The Roxy Theatre and the NY Comedy Festival to great acclaim.
Rita went on to concurrently produce and performed in the vanguard burlesque show The Velvet Hammer Burlesque, the show that ushered in the thriving burlesque movement. She took the comedians and dancers she developed from WTWL & Velvet Hammer and brought them along to LUCHA VAVOOM, which she co-created and began producing in 2002.
Combining Lucha Libre, Comedy, Burlesque and live music, LUCHA VAVOOM has become an LA institution and has played across the US and Australia as well as Fuji Rocks in Japan. It has appeared on numerous tv shows, most notably America’s Next Top Model, Fuller House and the season finale of Master. Chef. Miss D’Albert recently hosted the debut of Miss Rita’s Lucha VaVOOM in French(ish) & English to over 35,000 people at the Nuit Blanche Festival in Paris.
Rita also created and produced Girlie-Girl Catfight Show, The Bollywood Follies and worked as Dave Stewart of Eurythmics co-host on his tv show Ringmaster and produced, co-created and sang in the live show Dave Stewart’s Rock N Roll Circus.
As a dancer, Rita has appeared in many videos with Peaches, Rob Zombie, White Zombie, Combustible Edison, Queens of the Stone Age and Quireboys. She has also performed extensively with Agent Provocateur for their launch in the US as well as their perfume launch in London. She recently began performing regularly with NY punk legend Lydia Lunch, singing as well as writing and performing spoken word in Lydia’s West Coast shows.
Rita has sung live with Moderatto in Mexico City, Throwrag in LA, has toured Europe and the West Coast as a back up dancer with Peaches, and recently toured with Prince Poppcock as a back-up dancer.
